Alesis DM10 - Setup with Ableton Live Lite 8

DM10Module Black AngledOne of the greatest features on the Alesis DM10 drum module is the convenient USB connection, allowing you to trigger your favorite DAW or virtual instruments on your computer right from the DM10 kit.  This tutorial walks through setting up a DM10 drum module to work as a MIDI controller in Ableton Live Lite 8.

Setup & Preferences
Ableton Live Lite Setup
  1. Connect the DM10 module to your computer using a USB Cable and turn it on.

  2. Open Ableton Live Lite 8.
     
  3. Choose Live > Preferences (Mac) or Options > Prefernces (Windows).

  4. In the window that opens, select the MIDI/Sync tab. For both Input and Output choose USB DM10 MIDI Interface.

  5. Turn Track and Remote on for MIDI Port Input.

  6. Check and adjust your latency slider in Preferences under the Audio tab if you notice an echo or lag in the trigger response, then close the menu.

  7. Next build your drum kit using the Ableton Instrument library. You can drag and drop certain sounds from the Instrument Library into the main mixer window.

  8. Each drum sound chosen is assigned to a certain MIDI note and pad in Ableton. You can find each note assignment in the Drum Rack Pad located at the bottom of your screen in Ableton. Take note of all the sounds that make up your kit and what their MIDI note is. You will use these MIDI note assignments to map out your DM10 drum kit.

DM10 Hardware Setup
  1. Next grab your DM10 Module and press the INST button under the EDIT section.
     
  2. Press MIDI (F2).

  3. Use the CURSOR up and down buttons to navigate to the MIDI Note field. This is where you will assign each trigger on your kit to the MIDI note assignments in Ableton. Go through all the triggers on your kit until you’ve matched up each MIDI Note from Ableton. Use the VALUE/TEMPO Dial to choose the MIDI Note.

  4. Once you have made the proper changes for each MIDI Note in your kit, Press STORE and then DRUM KIT (F1).

  5. Name (F1) your User Kit and select Store (F4).

Recording Drum Tracks in Ableton
  1. In Ableton, record enable all of your tracks by holding Option(alt) and clicking on each Track Arm button 10. Make sure that on each track the MIDI From drop-down menu is set to All Ins + All Channels, the Monitor is set to Auto, and the Audio To is Master.

  2. Set your Master track to Pre.

  3. You are now ready to record a sequence using your DM10 kit!
