Alesis SR-16 - Saving and Sending SysEx Data

SR16 AngledThis guide walks through loading MIDI SysEx data to or from your Alesis SR-16 using your computer. This can be useful if you need to save your kits, patterns, or songs; or if you want to load patterns you have downloaded on the internet.

 

  1. First, you’ll need a MIDI interface for your computer. Alesis offers the following affordable solutions:
  1. Next, you’ll need a program to send and receive your SysEx data. We suggest the following two free utility programs:

Sending a SysEx file from your computer to the SR-16

 

  1. From the main screen in MIDI-OX, choose the MIDI port icon to Select MIDI input devices to open.
  2. Highlight your MIDI input and output ports and click OK.
  3. Next, choose Actions/Send SysEx file. Locate the SysEx file you wish transfer and click OPEN.
    MIDI-OX will immediately send the SysEx file to your SR-16.

 

Sending SysEx from the SR-16 to your computer

 

  1. From the main screen in MIDI-OX, chose the MIDI port icon to Select MIDI input devices to open.
  2. Highlight your MIDI input and output ports and click OK.
  3. Next, choose View/SysEx/SysEx/Receive Manual Dump. You should see a small screen indicating MIDI-OX is waiting for incoming data.
  4. From the SR-16, Press BACKUP, then press PLAY to send the SysEx data. You should see it being transferred on your computer screen. After the transfer, click DONE.
  5. Now, you can save your data. Select DISPLAY WINDOW\Save As… from the scratchpad window.
  6. Choose a location (perhaps My Documents), name your file and click Save. That’s it.
