I have connected a sustain pedal but it works the wrong way around. What do I do?

The polarity of the sustain pedal is calculated by the keyboard when it is powered up. On power-up, the sustain pedal is assumed to be in the OFF position. If the pedal is sustaining when in the Off position (pedal is not depressed), connect the pedal while the keyboard is turned off and make sure the pedal is not depressed while the keyboard is powered on.

What are the Advanced Functions for the Octave buttons?

The Octave + and - buttons on the Q49 MKII can be used to control 7 total functions. Press the Advanced button to enter the Edit mode and then press one of the 7 labeled black keys to choose a function (each key is labeled on the body of the keyboard).

  1. Octave
  2. Transpose
  3. Program
  4. Bank MSB
  5. Bank LSB
  6. Channel
  7. CC*

* When selecting CC, use the numbered keys to choose the CC value you would like to send and press the Enter key to select and exit Edit mode.

Can I use the keyboard to cycle through sounds in my plugin?

To remotely change the sound or preset of your instrument plugin, a program change can be sent using an advanced function of the + and - Octave buttons on the Q49 MKII. To do this:

  1. Press the Advanced button
  2. Press F#2 (the black key labeled "Program")

Now the Octave + and - buttons will send an incremental/decremental program change that will cycle up and down through the presets in your plugins. Press the keys on the keyboard while cycling through your sounds to find a sound that you like.

Can I change the MIDI channel on the Q49 MKII?

Yes! It's easy:

  1. Press the Advanced button to engage Edit mode.
  2. Press one of the 16 Channel keys (D2 to E4) to choose a MIDI channel.

The Octave buttons can also be assigned to step up and down through MIDI channels.

What is Mackie/HUI?

Mackie/HUI is a control surface protocol initially developed by Mackie and Digidesign for use with the Mackie Control Surfaces, like the Mackie Control Universal. The protocol was then adopted by many DAWs to allow compatibility with the hardware. Since then, it's become common for other controllers and keyboards to emulate this protocol to help users map out their control surfaces more universally and without hassle.

The Q49 MKII series can send Mackie/HUI messages from the transport and directional controls to help you easily map to your favorite DAW.

How do I use the transport and directional controls in my software?

The directional buttons and transport buttons use either MIDI, Mackie Control, or HUI protocols to control certain functions in your software/DAW. Press the Advanced button and then the key labeled DAW to cycle through the different assignments.

  • Mackie Control - Green
  • HUI - Red
  • MIDI - Orange

Because Mackie Control and HUI are so universal, it's easy to assign the controls with virtually any DAW. Refer to the article below for a quick setup with your favorite DAW:

Can I reset the controller to the factory default settings?

Yes! To reset the controller to factory defaults:

  1. Power off the Q49 MKII.
  2. Hold down the buttons + and simultaneously until step 4.
  3. Power on the Q49 MKII.
  4. Release the buttons.

My Q49 is turning on but won't make any sound in my software. What do I do?

This may happen if the MIDI channel was accidentally changed on the keyboard. The easiest way to resolve this is to either factory reset the keyboard or assign the keyboard back to your preferred MIDI channel.

Also, the volume fader sends a generic volume message (CC7) that may affect volume in your software automatically without any manual assignment of the control. Check that the volume fader is in the up position to guarantee a volume control in the software and/or plugin is not turned down.
